When a person experiences a life-threatening or deeply distressing event, the brain's fear-processing center, the amygdala, activates the body's survival response. In most cases, the brain processes and integrates the traumatic memory within days to weeks. However, in approximately 20% of trauma-exposed individuals, this natural recovery process becomes disrupted, leading to the development of PTSD.
In PTSD, the prefrontal cortex, responsible for rational thought and emotional regulation, loses its ability to effectively modulate the amygdala's threat responses. This results in a state of chronic hypervigilance where the brain continues to react as though the danger is still present, even in objectively safe environments.
Simultaneously, the hippocampus, which processes and contextualizes memories, may function abnormally. Traumatic memories remain fragmented and emotionally charged rather than being stored as coherent narratives. This fragmentation is why trauma memories can intrude suddenly and feel as vivid and distressing as the original event.
